What counts as a deductible trip (and what doesn't)

Round trips for GF food, medical appointments, and the rule-of-thumb to use everywhere else.

Mileage adds up faster than people expect, especially for households that drive to a specialty store. The bookkeeping is straightforward once you know which trips to log.

What counts

  • Round trips made specifically to obtain gluten-free food (a dedicated trip to a GF bakery, the specialty aisle 40 minutes away, etc.).
  • Trips to medical appointments related to the diagnosis (gastroenterologist, dietitian, blood draws for follow-up).
  • Tolls and parking paid on either of the above.

What doesn't

  • Regular grocery runs where you happen to pick up GF items alongside everything else.
  • Commute miles or general errands.
  • Trips where GF shopping was a stop on a longer non-medical outing.

The rule of thumb

Would you have made this trip if not for the diagnosis? If no, it counts.
